I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism In Your Yearbook

Pure emotive hardcore band out of California. Raw emotion, grindy guitar, and harsh vocals. Possibly one of the first of the early hardcore bands that ever used lower screaming vocals like what you hear nowadays in metal and deathcore stuff. I like these guys a lot. They remind me of I Have Dreams and a little bit of Kite Flying Society. So if you like them chances are you'll like these guys.

Their complete discography (to my knowledge) : I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism In Your Yearbook Discography

La Dispute

Five piece from Grand Rapids. These guys are slightly more on the end of post-hardcore (I don’t want to start a genre dispute) but nonetheless I love this band. One of my favorites, for sure. These guys are so talented. Guitar parts work together amazingly whether they are doing thick distorted parts or slower clean riffs. The bass lines are always great and often independent from the guitar, a plus in my book. Vocalist Jordan Dreyer’s lyrics are absolutely astounding and the way he presents them is just a great. I recommend this band even though they are a bit different from some bands on here, the emotion is still there no doubt.

First Album: Vancouver
Mini Albums:
            Here, Hear I *
            Here, Hear II *
            Here, Hear III *
            Untitled 7"
*These albums are four song, untitled, some LP/CD and some digital only releases that are done as benefits for separate organizations (as far as I know)

Orchid

Orchid is an early screamo band from Massachusetts that started playing in 97’. Great emotive hardcore band. I can’t say enough about the vocals in this band. Screams are absolutely insane. Definitely an early band on the forefront of power violence and emotive hardcore music. If you like Jeromes Dream chances are you’ll like Orchid.

Here is their demo: Orchid Demo
First Album (LP): Chaos Is Me
Third Album (LP/CD): Gatefold

The Khayembii Communique

Emo band out of Minnesota. These guys are nothing but pure fucking vocal chord destroying emotion. They describe themselves as "A scratchy seven-inch played over the abyss of intervening years of diversion, desertion, and destruction. Never to exist again." The band has a nice amount of slow guitar parts that are contrasted with fast strumming and distorted parts with amazing vocals. If you like Saetia or Kite Flying Society chances are you'll like The Khayembii Communique.

All of their recorded songs:  The Khayembii Communique Discography

The Saddest Landscape

This band is from Boston, started sometime in the late 90's. To me they are a mix of punk and emotive hardcore. Guitarist(s) switch it up between slow and fast riffs both distorted and clean. Vocals are awesome, super emotional songs. Great early skramz band for sure.

I recommend this album: Lift Your Burdens High, For This is Where We Cross
More albums: The Sound of The Spectacle
All Is Apologized For, All Is Forgiven Disc One *
All Is Apologized For, All Is Forgiven Disc Two *
Vinyl only release that they did: A Promise Was Made

I cannot find a download for their newest (2010) album but I will keep an eye out. It's called You Will Not Survive.

*These are, from what I understand, a compilation of all their 7" and LP releases, really anything done on record or tape or whatever that they didn't have a CD for.

Sharks Keep Moving

Seattle band that started in 98'. Very melodic and somewhat jazz-like guitar parts. The drums even remind me of jazz quite a lot. Excellent clean vocals. These guys sound pretty similar to Karate. If you like them chances are you'll like Sharks Keep Moving.

Full length album: Sharks Keep Moving
EP's: Desert Strings and Drifters
      Pause and Clause

Karate

Karate is an extremely unique band. They are a Massachusetts based band that formed in 93'. Their style is honestly a little bit of everything. They have an unparalleled mix of blues, jazz, and indie riff's that sometimes have a bit of a punk twist to them. Singer/guitarist Geoff Farina has an amazing voice that fits perfectly with everything they have going for them. I recommend this band to anyone looking for something new, something that is a departure from the screaming of most emotive hardcore bands but still maintains the emotional feel.

I recommend their  second full length album: In Place of Real Insight
But in case you want more...
First Album, Self Titled: Karate
Third Album: The Bed Is In the Ocean
Fourth Album: Unsolved
Fifth Album: Some Boots
Sixth Album: Pockets

The Spirit of Versailles

A band from South Dakota that formed in 98'. These guys have distorted yet melodic guitar riffs and great vocal lines. They remind me a lot of I Have Dreams. Awesome energetic and emotional band with some deep lyrics. Definitely check them out.

From what I can tell this is their complete discography in it's entirety: The Spirit of Versailles Discography

Kite Flying Society

I'm not exactly sure when this band started but they are an Orlando, Florida based emo band. Fast distorted guitars and great vocals. I love the singer's scream so much. If you like chances are you'll like Saetia, Off Minor, or I Have Dreams chances are you'll like Kite Flying Society as well.

You can get all of their songs here: A Discography

I Hate Myself

A Florida based three piece that started in 96'. This band has awesome melodic riffs on both the guitar and bass parts that are accompanied with shrill half-talk half-scream vocal lines. Then there are parts of some songs that are just downright distorted, raunchy, and heavy. I definitely recommend this band.

I Hate Myself released several vinyl only recordings and split up but then later decided to compile their recordings onto one final LP: Ten Songs

I Have Dreams

This band started playing due to the death of New Ethic's guitar player Daniel. Soon after his death I Have Dreams began playing as a way to cope with the death of their friend. They only released five songs. Each song is emotion charged with great clean vocals as well as screams. Great emotive hardcore band.

One and only album: I Have Dreams

Algernon Cadwallader

Although their name might be hard to say the trio from philly is not hard to love. Their Cap’n Jazz-esque vocals and superb twinkly riffs will leave you feeling like youre back in a 90’s DIY basement show. Long story short, they rock.

Records: Demo 7" and Fun 7"
Full length LP: Some Kind of Cadwallader

Braid

Illinois based band that formed in 93’. Pretty unique sound. Catchy and sometimes almost pop-ish guitar riffs, awesome clean vocals/shouts in their earlier stuff. Older stuff is really upbeat and more on the punk side. Newer stuff will put you in a trance of emotion. If you like great fast punk or American Football then chances are you’ll like Braid.

I can't find any download for their various 7" records that they did but I will keep an eye out.

However, this is their first album: Frankie Welfare Boy Age 5
Second Album: The Age of Octeen
Third Album: Frame and Canvas

Jeromes Dream

This band is the definition of power violence music. The Connecticut based band played short, distorted, and frantic songs. Their live sets were never more than ten minutes because as singer Jeff Smith often said “ten minutes is all you need to get to know who we are.” Jeff Smith also played live sets without using a microphone, absolutely screaming his lungs out. If you want insane, energy charged songs look no further.

Their discography: Completed

American Football

Illinois three piece that started in 97’ with former Cap’n Jazz drummer on vocals/guitar and bass. These guys never cease to amaze me. The clean guitar riffs are incredibly beautiful and twinkly and their lyrics really paint a picture. Sadly they only released one demo and an album but, it is what it is, I definitely recommend them.

Demo: American Football EP
Full Length Album: American Football

Hot Cross

This band was formed by ex vocalist and ex drummer of Saetia as well as ex You and I/Joshua Fit For Battle members. This band is a little more mellow in comparison to other bands the members have been in however Billy Werner’s vocals are still great and the guitar’s, usually with independent riffs, work really well together.

You can get their full first album here: Cryonics
Their second album can be downloaded here: Risk Revival
Deput EP: A New Set of Lungs
